Bed Bug Treatment in Memphis
If you wake up with bites in a line or cluster and find dark spotting on the mattress seams, check for bed bugs before you buy anything. Bed bugs rarely go away on their own, and a professional treatment usually takes more than one visit.

Bed bugs are the job where a cheap first attempt costs the most in the end. Ask for an inspection that confirms bed bugs before treatment.
How to confirm it
The University of Kentucky's bed bug fact sheet describes what to look for. Bed bugs gather in habitual hiding places like mattresses and box springs, and in bed frames and headboards. Those spots are marked by dark spotting and staining, which is dried excrement, along with eggs and tan shed skins. Rusty or reddish smears on sheets can come from crushed bugs. The "buggy" smell people mention is seldom noticeable except in heavy infestations, so don't rely on it.
Bites alone don't prove bed bugs; other things bite and people react differently. A photo of a bug, or of the spotting on a seam, is the most useful thing you can send.
Why they are hard to get rid of
They hide in cracks no wider than a toothpick. Nymphs and adults can go months without feeding (University of Kentucky). The EPA calls bed bugs a public health pest. Bites can cause allergic reactions and skin infections from scratching, along with lost sleep and anxiety. The EPA also says they have not been shown to transmit disease.
In apartments, they move between units, so a treatment in one unit often fails if the neighbors are not checked.
Treatment options
Heat
The company heats the room or home with heaters and fans until it is hot enough to kill all life stages, and holds it there for hours. It can be done in one long visit, but it costs more and you may still need a follow-up.
Chemical and combined treatment
Targeted products on seams and frames, and along baseboards, usually in two or three visits a couple of weeks apart to catch bugs that hatch from eggs after the first visit. Many companies combine this with mattress encasements and vacuuming.
I would not use a bug bomb on bed bugs. It does not reach where they hide and can spread them to other rooms.
What it costs
This Old House lists bed bug treatment at $1,000 to $4,000 (March 2026, national), the highest range in its pest table. That is a published range, not a quote. Ask whether follow-up visits and encasements are in the price. See the cost guide.
How to prepare
- Don't move furniture or sleep in another room until the company says to; it can spread them.
- Bag clothing and bedding and dry them on high heat, if the company asks you to.
- Clear clutter around the bed and along walls so the technician can reach baseboards and outlets.
- If you rent, tell your landlord in writing and keep a copy.
