Flea Treatment in Memphis

If you have bites around the ankles or a pet that won't stop scratching, treat the pet and the house in the same week, and the yard with them. Treating only one of them is why fleas come back.

Why fleas last here

Fleas spend most of their life off the animal. Eggs and larvae sit in carpet and bedding, and in shady soil outside. They do well in warm and humid weather, and Memphis has a long stretch of it: about 221 nights a year stay at 50°F or warmer at the airport, and only 6 reach 20°F or colder (NOAA, 1996 to 2025). Indoors, with the heat on, they never get a winter at all.

Do all three at once

The pet

Ask your vet for a flea product suited to the animal's age and weight. Treat every dog and cat in the house, including the ones that seem fine.

The house

Wash pet bedding in hot water and vacuum carpet and furniture hard, then empty the vacuum outside. Vacuuming also gets pupae to hatch so the treatment reaches them. The company treats carpet and floors, usually with a product that includes an insect growth regulator so eggs and larvae don't mature.

The yard

Shady spots where pets rest (under decks, along fences) are where flea larvae live outside. Sunny, open lawn matters less. Keep grass cut and pull back leaf litter from the places your pet lies down.

What to expect

You may see more fleas for a week or two after treatment, as pupae hatch and meet the treated surfaces. That is normal. Keep vacuuming daily during that stretch. If you still see them after a few weeks, ask for a follow-up visit, and ask whether it is included in the price before you book.

What it costs

This Old House lists flea treatment at $100 to $400 (March 2026, national). That is a published range, not a quote. A house with carpet throughout and a big shady yard sits at the higher end. See the cost guide.

Kids and pets during treatment

Ask how long people and pets should stay off treated floors and how long until the yard is dry. Take fish tanks and pet bowls into account; ask the company what to cover. The National Pesticide Information Center has guidance on pets and pesticides at 1-800-858-7378.
