Mosquito Control in Memphis
Start with standing water: tip out anything that holds water for more than a few days. If you still can't use the yard at dusk, a yard service treats the shady places adult mosquitoes rest, usually on a recurring schedule through the warm months.

When the season runs
Memphis mosquitoes follow the warm nights. The airport averages about 92 nights a year that stay at 70°F or warmer, almost all from June through September, and about 221 nights at 50°F or warmer (NOAA, 1996 to 2025). Rain keeps refilling the containers they breed in: the city averages 56 inches a year over about 111 wet days.

What Shelby County already does
The Shelby County Health Department runs a mosquito control program that traps and tests mosquitoes for West Nile virus across the county. Its larvicide work starts in February each year. It treats ditches and standing water to kill larvae before they become biting adults. It publishes a mosquito control activity schedule, and it offers mosquito fish for ponds. You can reach Vector Control at 901-222-9715. County work covers public ditches and neighborhoods; it does not treat your backyard.
What you can do first
The EPA's first step in mosquito control is removing places they lay eggs, because mosquitoes need water for two stages of their life. Around a Memphis yard, the usual sources are:
- clogged gutters and downspout extensions
- buckets and toys, plant saucers, tarps
- birdbaths (change the water weekly)
- low spots and drainage swales that hold water after rain
- old tires and covered boats or grills
Do this before you pay for anything. A yard service on top of a gutter full of water is money poorly spent.
What a yard service includes
Most services treat shrubs, the underside of decks and other shady resting spots with a barrier spray, and drop larvicide in water that can't be dumped. HomeAdvisor says treatments run on a recurring three-week cycle and that larvicide briquettes are a common add-on. Ask what product they use, how long kids and pets should stay off the lawn, and whether they avoid spraying flowering plants that bees visit.
What it costs
HomeAdvisor puts mosquito service at $100 to $400 per visit and $300 to $1,900 per season, with an average of $500 for a quarter to half acre (June 2026, national). Those are published figures, not quotes. Big wooded lots in Germantown and Collierville usually sit at the higher end. See the cost guide.
